I just noticed that Webdunia, the local language portal from the Naidunia group of publications, has launched games. The games site is currently in beta. The interesting thing is that the instructions for gameplay are available in multiple languages – Hindi, Tamil, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Kannada, Telugu, and Malayalam. However, I was unable to find any local language games – most of the flash based games, are still in English. Some games – like Tirandazi (Archery) are thematically Indian, but the text within the game (Score, fatalities etc) is in English.
Then again – aren’t most of the online readers of local language content in India bilingual anyway? This current feature is probably to offer another feature for Webdunia users, to keep them at the portal and increase time spent…another property. But the question still remains – is there a market for local language games? Or, as the cliche goes – games are games, whatever the language.
