Use Mibbit for Easy IRC

ScreenshotYou’d think that in 2008 setting up group chats via the internet would be a solved problem, but there’s always someone with a new solution. In the case of Mibbit, the solution is simultaneously old and new: a web interface to the venerable Internet Relay Chat (IRC). With Mibbit, you can connect to thousands of chat rooms across dozens of IRC networks, and view your chats in a nice tabbed interface that includes such niceties as direct message management and simultaneous translation.

The difficulty of finding easy-to-use client software has been one of the traditional hurdles to getting nontechnical groups to use IRC. Mibbit can help get you over that hurdle, making it easy to get your clients and coworkers into a group chat. It avoids the difficulty of finding a mutual IM network in a disparate group, as well as the expense of solutions like Basecamp.
