Anyone feel a bubble on the airwaves? Zee News plans to launch two new regional channels, one of which will be in South, and is considering an English and Business news channel as well.
Barun Das, CEO of Zee News, is quoted in this Mint article stating the channels plan to focus on ‘hard news’, they have roped in B.V. Rao, formerly senior executive editor at Star News, as group editor.
Zee currently has several channels in its regional fold Marathi, Bangla, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati and Punjab.
Consider this, Reliance Entertainment has announced
the launch of 20 channels, 80 channels are pending with I&B ministry and more are slated to be announced in the coming year. One look at the average age of the programming teams in most channels and there is a clear dearth of experienced talent. Put this in perspective with a global economy currently in a state of flux, average break-even projections for a TV channel in the 5+ year mark and you have an entire industry jabbering away at a gargantuan bubblegum.
