Journal Communications (NYSE: JRN), parent of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, reported Q4 revenues of $147.6 million, a decrease of 15 percent from $175.2 million in the prior year’s quarter. Net income of $9.5 million ($.15 per share) slipped 59.5 percent year-on-year from $23.4 million ($.33 per share). Note the company did book a one-time $1.9 million charge. You can blame the usual culprits for the decline, including weakness in classifieds and auto. Some highlights:
— Publishing: Division revenue fell 13 percent to $66.9 million from $77.8, although there was an extra week in the prior year’s quarter.
— Broadcasting: Revenue declined 19.2 percent to $56.7 million.
— Interactive: The company didn’t give out quarterly numbers, but annual interactive revenue at the Journal Sentinel grew 41 percent to $13.4 million. Total interactive revenue, across the company’s operations grew 61 percent.
— Outlook: Without giving any details, the company already sees Q1 down from last year.
