At four-pounds, I wouldn’t call Sony’s SZ7-series “ultra-portable”, but if you can handle a notebook that’s 33% heavier than Air, you’ll get a powerful package. Engadget says the S27’s are now available for pre-order and I just hit the SonyStyle site to see what they’re offering. The starting cost is a tad over $1,400 but provides a decent spec list at this price: 120 GB hard-drive, a 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 2 GB of RAM, Vista Home Premium, optical drive and 13.3-inch WXGA LED backlit screen in a magnesium case. For an additional $112 or so, I’m more attracted to the next model up: carbon fiber case, 160 GB hybrid hard-drive with 256 MB flash module and a slight bump in the CPU to 2.1 GHz. Of course, there are integrated WWAN options and plenty more ways to increase your bill to SonyStyle too. You could go hog-wild with the Premium Edition for $2500. ;)
