Craigslist Endows Berkeley 'New Media' Chair

Now we know how some of the money craigslist is making will be spent … the listings site is donating $1.6 million to the University of California-Berkeley to endow a chair in “new media,” a first for the school. The money will be matched with $1.5 million from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation to endow the chair at the new Berkeley Center for New Media. Hard exactly to say what the center itself is doing: the Mercury News includes this description from Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau: a major research center “where scholars and students can explore the powerful effect of new media and think rigorously about how new media will continue to change our lives and perceptions.” Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster will be on the center’s advisory board.
