Cloud Storage Evolves – The other day I wrote a piece about some of the pitfalls of storing your data in the cloud. The comments tipped me off to a vendor who’s trying to do something about that: ElasticDrive. They offer a virtual block decvice that can use Amazon S3 or (soon) Nirvanix as a backend, with all sorts of configuration options. The can handle continuous data protection (a la Apple’s Time Machine), RAID in the cloud, RAID where one drive is on your computer and one is in the cloud, and more.
Right now, the software is at a relatively early version, and available for selected Linux distributions only. But they say support for OS X and Windows is coming, so this is one to keep an eye on. They support storing 5GB of data for free, with pay plans as your needs increase beyond that.
Cross-platform Remote Control – Hot on the heels of the WebEx announcement of PC-Mac cross-platform remote control with PcNow, a couple other vendors are offering support for those of us who cross operating systems. GoToAssist Beta from Citrix offers the ability to remote control a Mac from a PC, while desktop-sharing tool Glance allows remotely sharing your Mac with other web conference participants. It’s all further evidence that Mac market penetration is getting to be too large to ignore.
The Truth about Self-Employment – Not all web workers are self-employed, but many of us are, and more are dreaming. Either way, you might find this piece from less everything amusing and informative. Tiny sample: “There’s no one doing the accounting and making sure you’re paid. Have you made bill collecting calls before? You will!”
