An interesting take, from Atindriya Bose, on why the 35 percent duty currently imposed on gaming consoles in India, should be removed: he tells Business Standard that the duty is intended to protect the local industry, and since there are only three console manufacturers, none of which are based in Inida, there’s no one to protect. Hence, the duty should be removed. His contention is that it creates a gray market – that only 15 percent of the three lakh PS2s in India have been bought from the official shops (thus — Sony’s (NYSE: SNE) only sold around 45000 PS2s in India). More on what the impact of the duty, and its structure, at Business Standard.
