Update: High placed sources inform us that there was never any proposal by the Censor Board; rather: the chairperson of the Censor Board had her own issues with violence in games.
(original story) One of the questions asked most frequently at the gaming sessions in conferences is its impact on children, and what gaming companies intend to do about excessive violence in games. Now DNA reports, quoting the Censor Board chairperson Sharmila Tagore, that there’s a proposal for censoring video games. The gaming companies usually respond, in the conferences, saying that each game already comes with a certification, and a minimum age mentioned. Beyond that, it’s up to the parents. But the Censor Board wants to give its own certification…why not just stick to accepted international standards? How will they evaluate the games anyway – by playing them? The oddest statement in the story “if there are certain portions in the game that are not suitable for children, might get excluded from the game.”
