Science media company Imaginova, the parent company of Space.com, Aviation.com and LiveScience.com, is serious about doing more acquisitions, and lots of them, from the sound of this story. It recently hired Jay Kirsch as VP of Corporate Development, and the person in charge of the M&A efforts. He was formerly a director at investment bank AdMedia Partners. Kirsch said targets are not necessarily in the categories of space and hard science, the story says, though I would imagine the deals would be on the smaller side.
Imaginova was founded in 1999 as Space.com, and after the boom and bust, in 2004 it changed the name of the company to Imaginova. It now has other brands such as LiveScience.com, Aviation.com and SpaceNews.com. It raised a $15 million round in 2006, in part to fund acquisitions. In October last year it bought comic book site Newsarama.com, and recently launched Aviation.com, a site that deals with all things flight-related.
