On Dec. 27th, My Link Love Gave to Me…

… 8 Tips for Coding,
… 5 Hints for Building,
… 11 PR Handouts,
… 7 Conference Call-outs,
AND … 5 steps to form an LLC!

There is no limit, it seems, to the number of tips that founders can share with one another. Read/WriteWeb published another great index of resources yesterday, called “36 Startup Tips: From Software Engineering to PR and More!”. This list was originally adapted from Alex Iskold’s blog, BlueBlog. Alex is the founder of AdaptiveBlue, which is helping to build the Semantic Web.

Alex’s list is as comprehensive as we suggest in our silly intro. It’s a little redundant in places, and not all of his tips are new, but it’s still a great list worth reviewing in its entirety. We’ve highlighted what we think is the most valuable point from each category, below:

I. #1 Engineering tip: “Have a technical cofounder”. No explanation necessary.

II. #1 Infrastructure tip: “Start with defaults, then tune the system.” It’s tempting to specialize your systems. But customization is costly. Don’t waste resources (time or money) on this until you know that you need it. Especially in the early stages, you probably don’t.

III. #1 PR tip: “Do not launch or release big news on a Monday or a Friday.” That this is Alex’s largest category we find curious, since PR is one things most of us agree startups need least.!! But he also emphasizes the value of “using community” which we think can be a very successful grassroots method, and a way to avoid a costly PR retainer.

IV. #1 Conference tip: “Launch at DEMO!” We’ll address what you can do if you can’t afford this in a later post, but Alex is right — if you can swing this, do it.

V. #1 Legal/Financial tip: “Don’t save money on a lawyer.” This is one piece of advice that Found|READ contributors offer consistently. In our opinion, skimp on the PR firm, and pay up for your Legal Eagle.
