Newspaper Roundup: McClatchy Interactive Drops 4 Percent ;Journal Com’s Online Ads Up 38.8 Percent

McClatchy’s (NYSE: MNI) struggles continued into November, as even interactive advertising revenues were down. Meanwhile, Journal Communications’ (NYSE: JRN) situation last month tended to be more in line with the rest of the newspaper industry: positive online activity amid overall declines in print advertising and circulation.

McClatchy: The company’s interactive ad revenues slipped 4.1 percent to $12.6 million from $13.1 million in November 2006. Year-to-date, McClatchy’s online revenues were essentially flat at .4 percent at $152.7 million. Overall, consolidated ad and total revenues last month fell 9.2 percent. Year-to-date ad revenues declined 8.6 percent and total revenues were down 7.9 percent on a pro forma basis. Release

Journal Communications: Interactive advertising revenue climbed 38.8 percent in November to $1.19 million from last year. As is the case with most newspapers, this was not enough to balance out declines elsewhere, largely due to lower than expected political ad spending and softness in most ad categories except for retail, which was up a bare 1.9 percent, and auto, which gained 35.7 percent. Combined publishing and broadcast group revenues fell 13.4 percent to $40.00 million; ad revenues from continuing operations came in $34.82 million, a decrease of 14.3 percent. Release
