Orange’s Latest Digital Media Index Shows Surge In Picture Messaging

Orange UK has released the latest edition of its Digital Media Index, covering June, July and August, with the operator saying its customers are sending 37 percent more picture messages and 25 percent more texts than they were six months ago. That translates into more than 1 billion texts per month from Orange’s 15.4 million subscribers, but just 7 million MMS per month — though that’s enough for The Guardian to say that MMS is finally catching on, five years after it was launched. NMA had some other findings from the index:

– Music sales (encompassing ringtones, ringbacks, full-track downloads and videos) were up 15 percent over the previous three months, to 295,000 downloads per month
– Users downloaded 690,000 games during the three months
– 2.34 million visitors go to the Orange World mobile portal each month, generating 73 million page views
– Users downloaded 938,000 videos in the first half of the year, with nearly a fifth of those falling under the “film” category
– The top full-track downloads were songs by Rihanna, Beyonce and Shakira, and the Kaiser Chiefs; the most popular game was “The Simpsons — Minutes To Meltdown”
