Home office EV-DO Rev. A speeds looking good on Mac and PC

Speedtestevdorevamac

Although my home office is the last place I’d use a WWAN connection, I’ve been testing the device here on multiple machines. I was concerned on Friday because the USB727 modem in the MacBook Pro was showing something strange: downloads, which are usually faster than uploads were actually slower than uploads. I was seeing a download speed around 500 kbps with the uploads hovering over 600 kbps.I’ve since retested on the Mac and the above screencap of my results from a few minutes ago are more like it: 1235 kbps down and 604 kbps back up. Whew! For most of the weekend I was concerned because the same modem in my Samsung Q1P tested at the same rough numbers as the test above. Incidentally, my first several speedtests on the Samsung Q1P with Vista kept freezing the machine. Hard. Nothing less than holding the power button would shut the machine. I assumed there was a glitch in the driver install, so I completely removed the VZ Access software and all drivers, rebooted and reinstalled everything. No problems now and I’m looking forward to some speed tests on the run. Additionally, this offers a good backup connection in the event of a power loss or DSL outage at home.
