It is not for us to gloat in others failures, but seriously, this one? Again? Moviebeam, the movie datacasting service which had been shut down once before, is now shutting off again, for good. For six months the service has been owned by the deeply-troubled movie chain store/retailer Movie Gallery, so this shutdown is not a big surprise. The service told customers this week that it will shut its doors on December 15, reports BetaNews. Some newer customers will be eligible for a refund on the hardware.
MovieBeam receives the content over the air with an antenna connected to a set-top box…the box was retailed for $250 and movies ranged from $3.99 to $1.99 USD, with a $1 surcharge for HD content. MovieGallery bought the company for less than $10 million earlier this year, a year-after a spinoff and recapitalization of MovieBeam backed with $52.5 million in funding. A brief history of the various re-incarnations of Moviebeam is here.
What does this say for Vudu and Building B?
