Id, the creators of Doom and Quake, have launched a new division — id Mobile. Id has already released a couple of successful mobile games, Doom RPG (1 million sold) and Orc & Elves (400,000 sold), which were co-developed with Fountainhead Entertainment. Now the development will be completely in-house (although the founder of Fountainhead Entertainment, Katherine Anna Kang, will serve as id Mobile’s president) which indicates that id is taking the mobile market more seriously. Id Mobile has ported Orcs & Elves to the Nintendo DS and will sell it for $30, and will release Orcs & Elves II in December, reports USA Today. Mobile games based on Quake and Wolfenstein are also planned, and they’ll all probably be distributed through EA Mobile. Id’s hoping that the strength of its name will draw some strong creative talent to the sector…and it just might.
