WWD Coffee Break – Mashups, Mind Maps, and Movements

Well, it’s Certainly Garish – MashupMania is a web-based ajax platform for rapid mashup development. Translated, that means you can create mashups just by dragging and dropping links between various widgets, and it takes care of all the XML plumbing behind the scenes for you. When you’re done, you can publish the results to your blog or other site.

And Speaking of Garish – Now that OS X Leopard has been out for a few days, people have figured out how to replace a few files to customize the new 3D dock. Try LeopardDocks or YellAtDucks if you’re in the mood to dress up the bottom part of your Mac screen.

Things Go Better with Google – Mind-mapping site MindMeister (which we’ve looked at before) has bolted on Google Gears to enable OffMeister, an offline version. Now premium subscribers can work offline and synchronize their work back when they’re reconnected.

And Speaking of Google – Our own fearless Om Malik explores recent events in Why is Google Afraid of Facebook? If you’re looking to make some sense of the tit-for-tat of OpenSocial and new ad platforms, his analysis of open vs. private ways to view (and monetize) the web may help you out.

It’s Not Just a Job, it’s a Movement – If you’re feeling alone and isolated in your web work, cozy up to this blog entry from Saul Wainwright. He reminds us that the trend towards independent contracting and flexible work could potentially shake up all sorts of things we take for granted, from the way retail sales are conducted to the very concept of TV “prime time.” Sure, there are drawbacks too, but it’s nice to be on the forefront of change sometimes.
