DVB-H Lessons From Finland For The Writers Strike

To see the results of the writer’s strike just take a look at Finland’s mobile TV market, suggests Hollywood Reporter. Back in 2006 Finnish broadcaster Digita announced plans to roll out a DVB-H service, which did pretty well in the trial. However, when the broadcasters who took part in the trial tried to get the rights to broadcast on the network but got knocked back by the creators insisting on a cut of the action… one by one they dropped out. “Digita was left with a total of one video channel, Voice TV, a music video station. Things turned so downbeat that Nokia (NYSE: NOK) even decided at the time to withhold its broadcast-equipped handset from Finnish stores.” The service is expected out in Finland in Spring, a delay of 18 months as the broadcasters negotiated the rights from the creators. The specific lesson according to the Hollywood Reporter is: “Don’t take so long this time to reach agreement.”
