Did Apple literally re-write history with Time Machine features?

LeopardtimemachineappleWith one more day to wait for Leopard, I’m still no closer to answering the question I had earlier this week in regards to Time Machine. Namely, can you back up to an external hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme Base Station? Some commenters have tried to help and for that I thank you. Unfortunately, there’s conflicting reports all over the web including some subtle product description changes on the Apple Mac OS X Leopard site itself. Well, depending on the time that is…

Macenstein hasthe Time Machine blurb originally showing from Google cache as:"Effortless meets wireless. With a hard disk connected to your AirPortExtreme Base Station, all the Macs in your house can use Time Machineto back up wirelessly. Simply select your AirPort Disk as the backupdisk for each computer and the whole family can enjoy the benefits ofTime Machine." [Emphasis mine]

Check the official feature set description now and you’ll read: "You can designate just about any HFS+ formatted FireWire or USB driveconnected to a Mac as a Time Machine backup drive. Time Machine canalso back up to another Mac running Leopard with Personal File Sharing,Leopard Server, or Xsan storage devices." No mention of AEBS now and there’s a slew of conversation / debate over this topic on the Apple support forums.

While I personally didn’t buy an AirPort Extreme specifically for thisfeature, other folks are saying that they did. History will becomeclear tomorrow for all, but if this scenario was pulled from TimeMachine, I’d like to think that some official word would come fromApple. If not for me, at least for all the folks that bought hardwareto support this anticipated and announced function.
