The BBC is considering new media opportunities in India – the Internet, Mobile and also FM, reports IANS. Particularly enticing for them is the news market on new media — Nazes Afroz, BBCs Executive Editor for South Asia says: “Just look at mobile phones. People can download news and listen to it whenever they want. There are 150 million mobile phones in India. By 2010 the number is expected to reach 300 million. It is a huge market.”
This is interesting, in light of the recent initiatives from Reuters (NSDQ: RTRSY) – first launching an India site both online and mobile, and the Reuters Market Light initiative for information for farmers. So should we expect an India specific website from the BBC? For now, they’re considering TV channels in Hindi and Urdu for India, though there are no concrete plans. Afroz is in the country to promote their Urdu website – to connect with readers and explain how the website works.
