While this announcement won’t get me to change my mind on the whole embedded 3G vs. external connectivity, it will give data plan subscribers a choice they don’t have today. At CTIA, Qualcomm announced their Gobi chip; no it’s not a snack you find in the desert, it’s a 3G chip that’s capable of supporting different network technologies. For example, you can use an embedded Gobi chip for EV-DO Rev A. or HSDPA/HSUPA. That means more choice and since current embedded solutions are an either / or situation, this is a winner to me. Don’t expect to see embedded Gobi chips in your mobile devices until the second quarter of next year, which might make for an ominous showdown with the Sprint / Clearwire WiMAX service, no?
