UK’s Carphone Warehouse has launched a second mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), reselling Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) minutes under the TalkMobile brand. TalkMobile is a postpaid offering whereas its other MVNO Fresh is prepaid. The deal is garnering a lot of comment because Vodafone stopped selling its contracts through Carphone Warehouse last year, and the Fresh MVNO is via T-Mobile. Carphone Warehouse is going the tried-and-true MVNO method of offering cheap plans: “The Talkmobile contracts come in nine, 12 and 18-month deals, starting at £12 (US$24.57) per month with 50 free minutes and texts…Carphone said the deal fulfilled demand for ‘lower-commitment contracts with great handset prices’. The Talkmobile 18 contract for £18 per month has 100 free minutes and texts” reports MobileToday. As a postscript, this Guardian story notes the UK Post Office plans to offer a broadband service, and if it goes well it will also launch an MVNO.
