US Leads World On Data APRU: Report

In a report that goes against general wisdom, Informa Telecoms & Media has released a report showing that subscribers in North America have the highest mobile data services worldwide. US data ARPU was $8.90 in the second quarter of this year, with Western Europe coming in second at $7 per month. That was followed by Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, the Americas and Africa (graph).

The data ARPU for North America increased 43 percent year-on-year in the second quarter, which Informa suggested was the result of strong uptake of ‘all-you-can-eat’ data packages, a near three-fold increase in 3G subscriptions year-on-year and rapid growth in SMS traffic. Total 3G subscriptions (WCDMA and EVDO) grew to over 38 million, while the total number of SMS sent in the regino more than doubled year-on-year to 93.7 billion in the quarter, equivalent to 120 per subscription per month. Total data revenues for North America came in at $6.97 billion for the second quarter, a 66 percent increase year-on-year. Total data revenues in Western Europe rose only 35.6 percent year-on-year, while global data ARPU was stable at $4.20.
