Orange Launches £3 Bebo; Replaces UK CEO To Halt Profit Slide

From our sister site mocoNews: After originally announcing this in March, Bebo and Orange have finally announced the pricing for a “Bebo Extra” version of the social network – £3 per month. The fee includes unlimited data access to the mobile site, sending and receiving of profile comments and posting of blog messages via SMS. It’s available via the Orange World portal and there’s no mention of it being an exclusive (so it’s effectively taking care of up-front data costs for access to the WAP site).

Meanwhile, the FT is reporting that Bernard Ghillebaert, the CEO of Orange UK, is leaving his post and will be replaced by “a Briton from outside the France Telecom (NYSE: FTE) group,” as the company tries to get a better grip on sliding profitability in the face of intense competition. Orange reported operating profit of 712 million euros (£496.5 million) in the six months to June 30, a decline of 8.6 percent compared to the same period in 2006. Bebo’s young audience may help – I hear its subscriber base currently is skewed to older users. More at mocoNews
