Sprint (NYSE: S) Nextel’s interim CEO Paul N. Saleh (the CFO) has said the company will continue with its WiMAX deployment, and laid concerns about the technology at the feet of the other telcos: “There are a lot of questions about WiMax obviously fueled by our competitors who would love to see us distracted,” he said. “But I would say it is a cornerstone to our future.” While there are probably concerns about Sprint’s WiMax investment that don’t come from the telcos competitors, I agree that building the network is a good move for Sprint. Whether you think telcos should be dumb pipes or smart pipes, everyone agrees they need pipes… Gizmodo notes that WiMax has got 3G certification from the ITU. Far more importantly Saleh is focusing on improving the companies customer service, generally seen as one of the big issues which sees customers leave. He’s also trying to reassure the staff and “rally Sprint employees around the basics of running a cellphone company”. Considering he is only an interim CEO and therefore won’t have any grand plan, this is probably the best way for him to go.
