One to Watch: WunderWorks

Some companies are worth watching by web workers not so much because of what they’re doing right now, but because of what they promise for the future. One that looks hot right now is Dutch firm WunderWorks BV, which recently landed a round of seed funding from a couple of investment funds. Their hook is that they enable users to connect multiple devices (including keyboards, mice, BlueTooth devices, interactive whiteboards, tablets, and even Wiimotes) to a single computer. Better yet, the technology works both in-person and across the internet. WunderWorks’ software enables group interaction and collaboration as well as simple connectivity.

As a first beta shipping example, they’ve put together WunderPoint, which is a PowerPoint add-in that allows presenters to receive live feedback from the audience during presentations. But what I see in the future – assuming that they can finish packaging this work into something with easy to use APIs – is software that will be absolutely wonderful for distributed development teams. I’ve been involved in several discussions lately trying to determine the best tools for remote pair programming. Some teams are making this work with screen-sharing tools like VNC, perhaps enhanced with Skype or video conferencing. Others have tried collaborative editors such as SubEthaEdit. But imagine actually hooking up an entire remote teams’ mice and keyboards to a single arbitrary editing session in mainstream editing software?  If WunderWorks can enable this, and other distributed web-work scenarios, we’ll all be happier and more productive.
