Telco Roundup: Airtel-Germany; AT&T In Talks With DLF?

– Bharti Enterprises Chairman Sunil Mittal has said that Airtel intends to ask German Chancellor Angela Merkel for a mobile phone licence when she visits India next month, reports Forbes, quoting an interview in the newspaper Handelsblatt. Airtel intends to cut prices and increase customers’ use of mobile phones if given a licence. Airtel is eagerly eying other overseas markets as well: the company is setting up operations in Sri Lanka, had bid for a majority 51 percent stake in Telkom Kenya, and have applied for a telecom licence in Qatar.

— Business Standard has a speculative story, as per which AT&T (NYSE: T) has approached real estate company DLF for a mobile JV in India. It was earlier reported that AT&T has applied for a telecom licence with Mahindra Telecom. The BS report reasons that AT&T wants a majority stake in the venture…although it does have 74 percent stake in the venture with the Mahindra Group.
