In an unusual only-in-Japan kind of deal, the three top newspapers in the country, The Asahi Shimbun, Yomiuri Shimbun and Nikkei, will jointly launch a new website next year, and wil also share their print distribution network. These media organizations will maintain their own sites, though, and will continue distributing news articles to sites such as Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) Japan.
The reason for the deal? To gain more clout in face of online competition, the companies said. The articles and editorial will be posted next to one another, partly in an attempt to lure younger readers to subscribe to their print editions, reports AFP.
