Ibibo launches Call For Free

MIH India has launched a service called Call For Free, which allows users to call each other on their mobile phones for free. Initially, I thought this was a VoIP service terminating in a PSTN network, which would have regulatory issues, but apparently – it’s not. I enabled the service, and clicked on the ‘call for free button’ on another users profile. In about a minute, I received a call from a “Private No” on my mobile, and was then connected to the other user. As a product, Call For Free seems to be similar to Google’s (NSDQ: GOOG) Click2call. Currently, 3028 users on ibibo appear to have enabled the service, and the company might use this service to get more users to sign up for the site.

This could be used for mobile chatting or dating (a feature which mobile companies have also enabled), though I wouldn’t be surprised if most people choose to only allow their friends to call them. However, there is a dampener, though – each call is currently limited to 2 minutes, with a maximum of 10 minutes. I don’t know how they’ll make money from this, and it can be a major expense — ibibo is going to pay for all the calls.
