Did someone just hang up on the future of CDMA for Verizon Wireless? It’s far to early to see, but you can read the text message on the wall since the company has announced a possible GSM-based future for the network. Their next generation, or 4G network will be LTE, which stands for Long Term Evolution. LTE is an IP-based UMTS standard that fits in with the GSM family, with promises of super speeds when rolled out in four years or so. How does 100 Mbps down grab you?
Here’s the skinny: 45% of Verizon Wireless is owned by Vodafone and Vodafone’s network is GSM-based. Things have gone fine with a CDMA network for Verizon and a GSM network for Vodafone, but eventually, investment money for network buildouts will be more effective if the same technologies are developed. Why spend dollars expanding networks for two platforms when you can leverage it for one, right?
