Sprint, Microsoft partner for GPS and voice recognition search

Sprint_ahead_logoSprint and Microsoft have jointly announced a new speech-enabled service that provides mobile search integrated with location based features on Sprint handsets. Speaking a search term into a Sprint handset with Live Search installed will return web results, local listings, maps, and more on select phones. The service will be free to all Sprint data customers and the software for the voice recognition features will be available for download on select handsets. According to the press release, the speech recognition aspects come from Microsoft’s purchase of Tellme.

Ever since we heard about privacy concerns with GPS, I’ve kept my eyes out for additional supporting evidence; this blurb jumped out from the PR: "The new GPS-enabled search allows customers to give permission to lettheir phone automatically identify their location to return nearbybusiness search results, such as the closest gas station, pizza placeor movie theatre…" Is anyone concerned about GPS devices providing their location? I personally find it a reasonable trade-off to gain value from GPS-related services, but I could be in the minority.
