Wyse X90 thin-client notebook line: no local data or apps

Wysex90notebookElectronista tells us that Wyse is introducing a new thin-client notebook line at the end of this month: the X90. My first take was along the lines of the poor Palm Foleo. Actually, that’s not entirely true: my real first take was remembering the old green or amber Wyse terminals from my first real job many moons ago. Anyway, the 12.1-inch notebook has minimal local storage in the form of a 512 MB flash module that also includes Windows XPe. The device runs on a VIA C7-M 1.2 GHz and requires a connection to Citrix’s Application Delivery service, VMware VDI, or Windows Terminal Server in order to run. The Wyse X90 offers WiFi and an Ethernet jack for your connection.

After seeing all of the product specs, I realized it’s not really Foleo-like after all in terms of functionality; it appears to be a true thin-client requiring the computing environment and applications to be provided from elsewhere. Starting at $599, it could be a good investment for businesses since minimal data is stored locally, providing safety for the corporate data. It might be fun if was running a Term Server at home and XPe supported my USB modem too; as we increase connectivity speeds and options, might we see a thin-client UMPC?
