Round-Up: CMMB, TDBM In China; DVB-H In Iran, UAE

– “China will have two mobile TV standards by the end of this year: CMMB and TDBM,” said Du Baichuan, former CTO of China’s State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) at the International Broadcast Conference. CMMB (China Mobile Multimedia Broadcasting) is well-known as China’s mobile TV standard, however TDMB TDBM is described by EE Times as “a mobile TV standard using China’s home-grown 3G mobile telecommunication standard, TD-SCDMA”, which seems to differentiate it from the T-DMB standard used in Korea.

— Spanish company SIDSA is teaming up with IRIB (the Iranian national radio and TV network) to trial a DVB-H service in Iran. The trial will have 16 channels: IRIB1 PER, IRIB 2 PER, IRINN, AL-Alam, IRIB, IRIB Quran and Press TV, from Eutelsat (Hot Bird), and IRIB TV1, IRIB TV 2, IRIB TV3, IRIB TV4, IRIB TV 5, IRIB 3, IRIB Amouzesh TV, Azarbayejan TV, Fars TV and Khalij Fars TV from Intelsat satellites. ITP has an in-depth article on a DVB-H trial in Dubai… Dubai Media City (DMC) has teamed up with operator du and the state-owned broadcast giants Dubai Media Incorporated and Emirates Media Incorporated for the trial, which will have 12 channels including Dubai TV, Dubai Sports, Abu Dhabi TV, MBC, Al Arabiya, BBC World, Prime Sports, Bloomberg, Zee Arabiya, Rotana Moussica, Zee News and Star Plus. UAE’s largest operator, Etisalat, is also conducting a DVB-H trial.
