Peter Chou, CEO of Taiwan manufacturer HTC, has said that “it remains a great challenge to transfer Linux-concepts into a product for commercial production because the Linux industry lacks a long-term cooperation partner, such as Microsoft” reports DigiTimes. Although it sounds like he was suggesting that the Linux community find a partner similar to Microsoft to get into the mobile market, I think it’s more likely he was refering to the 10 year partnership HTC has had with Microsoft and was suggesting that Linux need to find a long-term handset partner such as Microsoft has done. It’s a good point — a long term partnership lets both the software and hardware get better and work together better over time, because the companies don’t have a need to constantly learn how to work with their partner. HTC has certainly done well in the smartphone market with Windows Mobile, and Microsoft must be happy that HTC sells so many of its operating systems.
