652 Million 3G Users, 55 MB Per Month By 2010: Report

Merriman Curhan Ford has issued a report, Wireless Data Proliferation in Consumer and Enterprise Markets to Benefit Enabling Technologies, Services and Applications (PDF), predicting that growth in data ARPU will stabilize total ARPU for telcos — AT&T-Cingular is cited as an example of revenue from data offsetting revenue lost from voice. A lot of the increase in data revenue is expected to come from 3G subscribers, which are expected to grow from 172 million (about 6 percent of mobile users) at the end of the first quarter this year to 652 million people (around 14 percent of total subscribers) through 2010, at which point the average 3G customer is predicted to use 55 MB per month. The analyst argues that mobile entertainment and content, location based services and converged mobile devices will drive this uptake.
