How to create instant restore points in Windows

SystemrestorevistaScott Dunn has a great tip in this month’s PC World print mag, but you can catch it right here online. Scott creates a Windows shortcut that calls to VBScript; click the shortcut and you’ve got an instant restore point, which could be useful before making system configuration changes. The timing of this tip is perfect as I just wiped my Q1P over the past weekend and I’ve been rebuilding as time permits. One of these days I’m going to either create a slipstream Vista disk or get some use out of Norton Ghost… I keep saying that, but it never seems to happen.

Anyway, while you could navigate through the many menus to get to the System Restore Point function in Windows XP or Vista, this tip gives you the same option with a double-click…or tap and hold in my case. For the truly paranoid, I suppose you could even use Task Scheduler to kick off this VBScript on a regular basis.
