I thought I’d do a follow up on yesterday’s post where we covered UMPC battery wear. Prompted by Rodfather’s post, I took a screen shot of my Samsung Q1P 6-cell battery attributes: the battery wear was 32% and the maximum charged capacity was 38850 mWh. The device runs around 9 or 10 Watts per hour, which jives with the 3.5 to 4 hours of use I get on one battery charge. The wear comes into play because out of the box, the battery is designed to hold 57720 mWh and that makes sense: originally, I was easily getting five hours on a single charge.
The screen cap shown today indicates that the wear has been reduced to 26% while the maximum charged capacity is up to 42180 mWh, or roughly an 8% increase. The increase isn’t vast, but following the simple battery calibration steps, it took little to no effort on my part. As always, your mileage may vary but I definitely recommend a monthly battery calibration or refresh to maximize your effective battery life. Yes, batteries are a consumable, meaning they will slowly erode in performance and might need replacement, but you can eek out a little more life with this simple tip.
