iFuntastic, one of the first iPhone customization apps, got a refresh to v 3.0.3 earlier this week. Although it adds more features, I’m not going to keep using it based on a 30-minute experience earlier today. The app does work as advertised: it "unshackles" your iPhone so you can customize it and you can mod wallpapers, files and ringtones. The problem I ran into is that the customizations have added too much complexity to the simplistic UI of the native iPhone. The biggest problem for me was evident with the new homescreen tool. Or should I say "homescreens" since you can now have four of them.
Yup, there’s now room for up to 80 applications, 20 per screen. Theonly problem is: there aren’t that many apps for the iPhone yet and Ican’t seem to get the icons for the four pages off of my home screen. Isimply don’t want them there if they point to nothing. I did try tocustomize my home screen, which iFuntastic does allow but then ran intoa different issue. When putting the standard icons back on the screen(and not adding the four extra page views), the text labels for theicons aren’t the standard ones. In fact, some are now too long. Forexample: Safari’s icon now reads "MobileSafari" and is too long.Perhaps there’s a way around this, but for now, I’ll stick with iBrickrand keep it simple. My CTU ringtone keeps me happy. ;)
