While the industry continues to speculate over whether there may be a deal in the works between mobile operator China Unicom merging with China Telecom, the latter is continuing to try to build up its own wireless business services. Today Interfax reports that the search company Yicha.cn has inked a deal to be the search platform for China Telecom’s PHS (personal handyphone) service. With only around 62 million subscribers to China Telecom’s PHS service, the technology is lagging far behind more ubiquitous cellular services based on CDMA and GSM. Yicha operates search portals both in China and Japan.
