BSE listed real estate co Parsvnath Developers has informed the stock exchange that they have sought Unified Access Services Licence (UASL) for providing telecom services in 22 circles in India. [news via Reuters] Recently, TRAI had decided not to recommend putting a cap on the number of mobile operators, following strong opposition at an Open House discussion…though someone had also mentioned that some applicants may be seeking to acquire a license only for reselling.
The license for Unified Access Services would entail a 2G licence for GSM and a triple play of various services like IPTV, Wi-Max, internet, broadband and any other services relating to the signal. Apparently, several companies have applied for licenses given the growth that the sector has seen.
Update: Bloomberg adds that the Parsvnath intends to invest 17 billion rupees ($414 million) to offer mobile-phone and Internet services. The company is also in talks with an overseas wireless operator to sell stake in the special purpose vehicle it intends to set up for the mobile business.
