I’ll have to check my calendar to be sure, but didn’t we just go through this episode not that long ago? Apparently it hasn’t been long enough since a text message fee increase, so Sprint is reportedly raising the price to $0.20 a message on October 1st. As I read it, this fee hits folks that don’t have text messaging included in their plan as well as for overage messages above those included in your plan. Oh, and don’t try the "you’ve materially changed my contract so I want out for free" approach as Sprint is already saying it won’t fly.
Regardless of Sprint’s message increase, I think the bigger issue in the text message space is charging BOTH the sender and the recipient. If someone texts me, that’s their choice and I shouldn’t pay for it at any price. Yes, I realize that both caller and recipient get charged for a wireless call, but I have the choice as to answer that call or not. Short of blocking the world from sending me text messages, I simply don’t have that choice. I think I’ll add this one to my "Four ways to fix the broken cellular market" list.
