Audio And Video Searcher Pluggd Secures $6 Million Funding

Multimedia search engine Pluggd has raised $6 million in funding in a round led by Intel Capital, VentureBeat reports. Other backers included DFJ Frontier, Labrador Ventures and the Band of Angels. As we noted at the end of last year, the Seattle-based company raised $1.65 million in a seed round, most a portion of which came from Intel, which was joined by a group of angel investors including former RealNetworks CFO Mark Klebanoff. Since its inception in February 2006, Pluggd has gradually rolled out additional search capabilities and is able to find both audio and video on third party sites. VB compares it to other multimedia searchers YuMe, which is aimed more towards advertisers, and EveryZing, which started out as PodZinger. Pluggd’s point of differentiation rests mainly on the “heat map” it provides that shows all the places in a video or audio file where a search topic is mentioned as well as related themes. In this example, you can search a ZDNet podcast for various words – “iPhone”, for example.
