Judd Apatow is bringing his signature schlubby shtick to the world of high school with Superbad, opening tomorrow. And while the MPAA seems to hate the fact that people can distribute their precious content online, studios have certainly embraced the marketing potential of the Web — especially when a production is aimed squarely at a younger demographic.
Joost, for one, is happy to be broadcasting a scad of trailers and clips from the upcoming flick. Just type “superbad” in the search box and hit play to catch them all. But for those of you with a crush on George Michael Bluth (Michael Cera), there’s plenty more where that came from.
Apple (AAPL) has been hosting high quality Quicktime trailers for ages now. And of course, what teen comedy would be complete without a MySpace page? Or an official site done in a Flash popup that’s difficult to navigate? But the real treasure trove is, naturally, on YouTube, where a search for “superbad” turns up all the R-rated previews, trailers, clips and fake promotional interview appearances — as well as this awesome clip of a Japanese band’s take on James Brown’s “Super Bad” a la Kraftwerk.
But I digress. As you can see, studios have no problems plastering clips all over the Internet. But good luck trying to purchase a download to watch at home — you’ll have to wait months, if it’s ever released, and then watch it with whatever player supports the DRM of choice. Though, with a film like this, the experience of all the special effects, visual wizardry and surround sound magic just wouldn’t be the same on the small screen.
