The US Mobile Content Classification Scheme

It’s not really news, but useful for the mobile content industry: Mark Desautels, Vice President of Wireless Internet Development at CTIA, has written an op-ed on the current state of mobile content classification in the US over at RCR News. Content is basically split into two camps: That content which is suitable for people under 17 is freely available on the carrier decks, and that content which is unsuitable for people under 17 is not on carrier decks until they have age verification and restriction tools in place… which Desautels implies isn’t as simple as might be thought. In order to avoid getting into the content classification business themselves, the carriers are relying on the existing classification systems and porting them across — the exception being movies where a single inappropriate scene is enough to push it into the over-17’s category. For the internet they’re offering filters.
