Gartner expects India’s IPTV subscriber base to cross 75,000 by 2011. [via Economic Times]
Now, with such a projection what does one make of MTNL’s target of hitting the 40,000 mark for its IPTV subscribers this fiscal or of Reliance Communications Ventures plans to reach five million customers in 200 cities across India through its IPTV network (timing not mentioned in news reports). The ET articles quotes Ashok Chandak, director, sales and marketing, NXP Semiconductors India, as saying that the cost of an IPTV set-top box should drop from $100 to less than $60 by 2008. Still, the wide gap between Gartner and companies’ numbers — even if we give allowance to the different time periods for the outlook — suggests that researchers and corporations seem to be living in different worlds. Like they say, there’s lies, damned lies and statistics.
