Telstra Touts Strong 3G Uptake, Content Increase

Telstra CEO Sol Trujillo has touted strong growth in the companies 3G subscriber, claiming it increased by more than 530 percent in the 12 months to June 30, to more than 2 million subscribers. This has also translated to increased mobile content and services (many people signed up for 3 when it launched years ago simply because the calls and messages were cheaper)… 90 percent of people on the HSPDA network (NextG) have visited the “My Place” portal, and there has been a 39 percent increase in the number of customers using Sensis search on their mobiles (although there’s no absolute figure). “Mobile data has really taken off since we launched the Next G network – we already have six times more customers using BigPond Wireless Broadband and Telstra Mobile Broadband on the Next G network than we do on the old EVDO network” said Trujillo. However, while there is a boost in mobile content usage the overall figures are still low. For example, Foxtel by Mobile subscribers increased by 18 percent to 50,000… 18 percent increase is good, 50K is just 2.5 percent of the 3G user base. Other figures given include more than 400,000 music streams downloaded and 300,000 games downloaded. (release)
