Motorola has released a new mobile Linux platform, dubbed Motomagx. The handset manufacturer plans to get 60 percent of its handset portfolio based on Linux in the next few years… the first products using Motomagx will be the music-optimized MotoRokr Z6 and the Motorola Razr2 V8, reports Cellular News, adding that the V8 will be Motorola’s first Linux-based device in North America. The Motomagx platform supports applications in Java ME, and Motorola “plans to introduce new WebUI (featuring web technology to enable widgets and Web 2.0 experiences) and native Linux application environments in upcoming releases”. The company obviously hopes to tap into the huge base of Linux developers, and it’s not a bad plan — it will be at LinuxWorld touting its platform. (release)
