I’ve really only dabbled with Linux, but now might be a good time to take another serious look at the operating system. The handwriting has been on the wall for a while as I believe Lenovo announced they’d offer Linux on notebooks some time last year. The announcement is now a reality as yesterday the company announced that Novell SUSE Linux would be an option for the ThinkPad T series, a business line of notebooks. This follows Dell’s offering of Ubuntu on select machines earlier this year and looks to be an emerging trend as Linux becomes more user-friendly; at least that’s my impression after spending some with Ubuntu.
An OS is only as good as the driver support is has for starters, which was one of the main concerns with Vista over the first several months of availability. The Linux community has a way of finding ways to make things work however, so I think we’re seeing the early signs of the predictions: you know the ones, the statements over the past number of years that Linux was going to take away chunks of the commercial OS market. We’ve also got Linux based UMPCs under development, not to mention the Linux powered Nokia Internet Tablets, the PepperPads and the Palm Foleo. There’s talk of the oft-rumored Google phone to be Linux based. I’d miss my Tablet PC features for sure, but yes….I think it’s time to take another look at Linux.
