Emirates To Allow Passengers To Use Their Mobiles In the Sky

Dubai-government owned Emirates Airline could be the first flight operator to offer passengers the option of using their own mobile telephones onboard, according to the claims of Salem Obaidullah, vice-president for Emirates West Asia and Indian Ocean operations. [via Economic Times] Obaidullah said its tieup with inflight mobile service provider, Aeromobile, will soon allow passengers to use their own mobile phones to make and receive phone calls, as well as text messages, during the flight. Users will be billed by their own mobile phone service providers and the charges are expected to be in line with international roaming charges. The airlines decided to introduce this service after passenger feedback revealed that they wished to use their own phones on board rather than the in-seat phones. “In future there will be increasing convergence of mobile phones with other devices, such as cameras, PDAs and portable media players,” Obaidullah said. “Passengers would like to use these features during the flight, and not just the basic telephone.”
