Spanish telecom Avanzit put in $8 million of a $9 million second round for Houston-based mobile messaging provider Berggi. The company specializes in smartphone-like apps for the non-smartphone set, which still means most handset users. The investment is part of a strategic partnership as Avanzit plans to expand its Navento unit outside Spain. Current VC investor Adara Ventures added $1 million to the round. The company raised $3 million in a first round led by Adara in late 2006 when its first product Berggimail soft launched; that product is free in the U.S. and operates on Sprint and AT&T. Berggi plans to introduce a “downloadable consumer portal for mobile messaging” in August. Release. (Via VentureBeat)
